Waking Up With Jaw Pain: Clenching and TMJ

What do the symptoms look like?

Waking up with jaw fatigue, a pressure resembling a headache at the temples, a "click" on opening the mouth — this picture usually has one cause: nighttime clenching (bruxism).

Why do we clench?

Stress is the best-known trigger, but sleep apnoea, caffeine, some medications and bite problems also play a role.

Marks left on the teeth

  • Flattening at the edges of front teeth
  • Notching near the gumline
  • Recurring chips at filling and porcelain edges

Does a night guard really work?

Yes — it doesn't stop clenching, but it distributes force evenly across the teeth, protecting them and the joint. The key is a custom-fitted guard.

When is evaluation needed?

Don't wait if your mouth opening has narrowed, your jaw has locked, or pain radiates to your ear.
